The filtering mechanism of GPF is basically the same as that of diesel engine DPF. Exhaust gas passes through the porous wall at a certain flow rate. This process is called "Wall-Flow". The wall-flow particle trap is composed of honeycomb ceramics with a certain pore density. By alternately blocking the honeycomb porous ceramic filter, the exhaust gas flow is forced to pass through the pore wall, and the particles are captured and filtered through the four methods of diffusion, interception, gravity and inertia respectively.
However, there are still many differences between GPF and DPF. The main difference is the substantial difference between gasoline and diesel engine exhaust. Compared with modern light-duty diesel, the amount of particulate matter emitted by gasoline engines is about 10-30 times lower. This difference promotes different choices of the best filtration technology.

For wall flow structure, GPF generally uses Cd (cordierite).
2. The principle of particle capture by GPF:
To meet Euro 6 / China-VI stage light-duty vehicles PN emission requirements, WFEC developed WFG series cGPF catalysts. WFEC cGPF catalysts can achieve excellent PN filtration rate through optimized washcoat design and distribution. By improve of washcoat material and coating process, the backpressure of cGPF catalyst is largely decreased, thus the negative influence on engine fuel economy by cGPF is obvious lowered. And the active catalytic washcoat on cGPF can deeply purify gas pollutant (such as THC, CO and NOx) and fulfill Euro 6 / China-VI aging requirements. cGPF can install in CC (Close-coupled) or UF (Under-floor) position, applying together with TWC. The vehicle emission of PN and gas pollutant is able to completely satisfy Euro 6 / China-VI regulations after employing WFEC TWC+cGPF aftertreatment system.
